Overview of Client
As the Hawai‘i chapter of the National Association of Counties, HSAC is composed of the legislative bodies and mayors of Hawai‘i, Maui, O‘ahu, and Kaua‘i counties. One of the organization’s key purposes is to coordinate county programs, including the annual conference—an event that brings together government leaders from across the state.

Design Decisions
The ‘a‘ali‘i plant, known for its ability to thrive in harsh conditions, became the foundation of the visual identity. I proposed this direction to align with the conference’s theme of resilience while maintaining a minimalist and clean aesthetic, which the client supported. In the first design review, the client felt the logo appeared too rustic—almost giving off a “Flintstone” look. Using that feedback, I refined the design by softening the edges to achieve a more polished and balanced appearance while preserving its natural character. To complete the deliverables, I developed a flexible pattern system inspired by clusters of ‘a‘ali‘i pods. Each stage of the plant’s growth—from sprout to full bloom to a complete lei—served as a visual metaphor for progression and place-based innovation that the community can take pride in. This system gave the coordination team visual cohesion across all conference materials and allowed for adaptable variations to distinguish sponsorship levels throughout the event.
